Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu? Choose one underground city for your Cappadocia trip
For a first visit, one underground city usually leaves more time to understand the spaces and enjoy the rest of the day. Choose by your interests, the route and your comfort in enclosed passages, rather than trying to collect two entrances.

What is different?
Kaymaklı is useful for looking at connected living and storage spaces; its official visitor information describes four illuminated levels open to visitors. Derinkuyu offers a different sequence of deep passages, communal spaces and a missionary school. The museum route in use on your visit matters more than the total historical depth: not every level is open.
Plan the visit around your route
Our suggestion is to allow roughly 60–90 minutes for one site, including tickets and a short pause; this is planning guidance, not a guaranteed tour duration. Add travel time separately. If combining an underground city with Ihlara, keep it on a southern sightseeing day rather than squeezing it between Avanos and the northern valleys.
Comfort comes before the checklist
Both sites include steps and low, narrow passages. Do not treat either as a step-free attraction or promise that one is easy for everyone. Before buying a ticket, discuss the current route with museum staff if enclosed spaces or mobility are concerns. Wear shoes with grip and keep your hands free; a stroller is impractical inside.
Tickets and the tour you actually book
Check the official museum links below for current opening and ticket information. A tour name alone does not confirm which underground city is included. Pearls’ advertised Green Tour describes Kaymaklı; ask for a written itinerary if Derinkuyu is your priority. A private route can be requested, with entrances and timing confirmed in the quotation.
